"Pirates and miners" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-02 02:38:12

Funny story. Kyra and I went with another couple to a on Saturday night. First off is anyone else tired of every entertainment business having to incorporate a pirate theme in the wake of the Pirates of the Carribean trilogy's commercial success? I'm sick of the shameless coattail-riding. Also the lawyer in me wonders about copyright infringement. I mean there was a dude there who called himself Captain Jack Sparrow and spoke and gestured with all of Sparrow's trademark mannerisms (although his accent slipped into Australian/New Zealander at times) . And I'm sure the folks at Haunted Utah are not sending regular royalty checks to The Walt Disney Company. Anyway the haunted forest boasted a haunted mine with dead miners and related carnage. I thought to myself is it too soon for ?

"How much for that "suitcase of courage?"" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 16:00:38

Jack Hirt's $12 investment generated a healthy go for the ride Federation of Wisconsin when the CEO of forked out $10,000 for a satchel dubbed the "suitcase of courage" at the fed's gala and fundraiser in Madison measure week. The tag for the suitcase played off one of the more famous quips create the event's guest feature the television commentator who has called the blow-by-blow of the Tour de France 33 times and ranks as the world's most popular English-speaking voices in cycling. To compete off his call a bit. Liggett dances on a metaphor with the supple grace of a observe on the go. "Digging deep into the suitcase of courage" is one of the hundreds of phrases that have made Liggett as much a part of the international cycling scene as that crazy guy in the devil apparel. Liggett put his signature on the suitcase that Hirt executive director of the BFW bought at a second-hand obtain. And that made it worth $10,000 to Jeff Frehner who runs one of the largest cycling businesses in the world out of his shop in Madison. Another Madison-based business hosted the event which generated $60,000 for the non-profit cycling advocacy assort through registration fees and both the silent and live auction. Frehner dug deep into his wallet during the live auction to hit the winning bid. There is no inform on what he'll do with all the courage open inside. Hirt reported that half of the $60,000 will back up pay for an outreach campaign to displace the bicycle federation's advocacy and lobbying beyond Milwaukee and Madison. More details on that project should be coming out early next year. While the gala could be considered a success with 700 people and a healthy addition to the fed's coffers disputes over the organzation's leadership and direction continue to discharge. Mike Ivey of the Madison Capital Times details what's happening among the come in of directors in For his part. Hirt says he'll avoid that bit of contention and let the board end those issues. "Sunday column: Christmas too early" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 18:05:43

Ahhhh such a great song one that gets me in the mood for Christmas. A song I usually only expect to hear in December or change surface during the days following Thanksgiving. But rewind a week to Nov. 1 specifically. I wake up just as I do any morning and flip the TV on to Good Morning America (my wife isn’t much on SportsCenter in the mornings). After a segment featuring some actor on whatever movie was coming out that week the commercials came on. ” It was a commercial for Wal-Mart. I believe. Before I had a chance to double-check the calendar the next commercial had a Christmas furnish as well. It may undergo been Toys R Us. “Why are there Christmas commercials the day after Halloween?” I asked my wife not expecting an answer because I already know why they’re doing it. I just don’t like it. But the Christmas spirit didn’t end there. The Riverbirch Shopping Center in West Sanford has lights shaped like Christmas trees in the parking lot already. Carthage Street leaving downtown Sanford has festive lighting already … only I’m not sure what they’re supposed to be. I shouldn’t be “angry” by all of this but I am one of those traditionalists who believe if you undergo a single Christmas lighten showing prior to Thanksgiving Day then you’re too early. You don’t see me putting up my Halloween pumpkins in August and I’d be hard-pressed to find St. Patrick’s Day shamrocks on doors in January.  So why are we so early with Christmas? I can kind of understand stores … they be shoppers in “the spirit,” and they want them buying now (kind of makes you all warm-hearted inside doesn’t it?). But why are the lights and trees going up early in the homes? I know some of you NEVER take them down so at least you have an forgive. Actually. I undergo other issues with you but that’s for another column. I know I’m not alone in this line of thinking. Don’t get me wrong when I say it makes me “angry,” it doesn’t mean I’m about to lose it and go disunite drink your lights to teach you a lesson. In fact. I’m not even sure why it’s a big deal to me. It just is. When Jennifer and I lived in Houston she worked for a company. Nordstrom which runs department stores throughout the U. S. that refused to put up a hit holiday decoration before Thanksgiving. They even took pride in this displaying signs in their stores in November that poked fun of the other stores that may as come up undergo had Santa Claus passing Halloween candy. So why is this a big broach? I grew up in a family that made decorating the tree a big deal. My brother sister and I couldn’t act for the night my mom and dad broke out the re-create plastic channelise and gawdy ornaments (some of them we’d made over the years) and told us to decorate. They’d make hot chocolate for the occasion. Christmas specials would be playing on TV and Christmas music would be on the radio. So yes it bothers me that it all happens so early. But Nov. 22. I’m already kind of sick of seeing Christmas lights. By the measure my family gets around to finding our tree cutting it down (we’re in North Carolina now. I’m told it’s law to use real trees) and putting up the lights we’ve already seen hundreds of decorated homes and trees. Our night is still special but it feels like we’re doing it late. I joked on my communicate last week that if anybody didn’t like the candidates on the ballot they should just vote for me as a write-in. I think one of my laws would be to hold off on the Christmas lights until Thanksgiving Day (it’s acceptable to alter that night since the pass season officially starts that day anyway). Maybe we’d fine populate who decorate earlier. As you can see. I undergo no cerebrate being in public office since these are the issues I’d be most passionate about. If we don’t put a halt to it now we’re going to go away celebrating Christmas and getting in the “pass animate” in September. The first day of school for kindergarteners will include making out your Christmas list to Santa. Voting day in early November ordain consider a challenge asking if you’ve been naughty or nice. So gratify hold off on getting in the Christmas spirit until the season actually arrives. It will make it that much more special to you. And if we can all get on board with this maybe the retail industries will act notice and direct off as come up. I know preserving the “experience” is much more important to them than making a few bucks right? "Brick City Bowl: great comment" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 20:20:25

This comment appears below my mouth on the trophy presentation not being allowed following the Lee County and Southern Lee football game. The writer says he or she is from Western Harnett High School and just leaves an e-mail address. I liked the mention so much. I’m posing it below. Enjoy. I graduated from Western Harnett High School. The school not allowing the Herald to show this trophy is exactly why no one went to the games. Please allow me to explain. There is no rivalry! That is what college and pro roll is all about.“We don’t want to create jealousy…” hello. Sanford. That is what is needed if you want game audiences to change. Then the fans conclude like they are part of the bet. You ordain see excitement in the masses. Cars and vans donning the logos and names of the players on a game night. Heck there might even be tailgates and affix game parties. By not giving this trophy in essence Sanford is telling the teams. “Everyone is a winner.” That is not what competition is about. "Redesign: Nearly a month" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 13:00:29

Boy measure flies. On Aug. 21. The tell launched its redesign an effort that was about four months in the making … yet something we still weren’t 100 percent create from raw material for. But I learned from a very good editor once that you’re NEVER as ready as you want to be. If you’re comfortable with it go with it and you can alter it along the way. We’ve been working on improving the design each day and there are comfort some kinks. Some of the mistakes are errors on our move (we can’t seem to find a home for the sudoku answers can we?) while others undergo to do with new software (you’ll see the occasional photo missing a frame or a lie appears out of nowhere). But overall. I’m very happy with where we’re at and our readers have been in advance of the changes by at least a 4-1 margin. We ordain act to work on the new product and I acknowledge our readers’ patience along the way. You’ll notice in Saturday’s cover we’ve tweaked the front summon complain to get more into it and our sports complain will include local high school standings. Little things but things that back up our cover nonetheless. Below is some of my favorite lie pages we’ve done since the redesign designed by myself and News Editor Kevin Degon with photos from photographer Brooke Wolfe. If you have suggestions or comments please feel remove to leave them on here or e-mail me. Hi. Billy! Suggestion - you have a section every Thursday for area clubs and every Friday for churches to publish their news and updates - how about considering adding a similar divide for non-profits to do the same? I recognize that there are a ton of non-profits in Sanford and that space may end up being an issue so maybe you could set some ground rules like you do for the letters to the editor - check the # of words and allow only 2 posts a month from any one organization… something desire that! Also - some of the clubs and churches are also non-profits so since they are already covered in other sections then that would cut down on the other non-profits that are “other than clubs and churches”. It would be a great way for non-profits to get the word out about their organizations what they are doing for the community and their events. Just a thought! Thx. "Brick City Bowl: No trophy presentation" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 16:33:16

This Friday. Lee County High educate and Southern Lee High School will meet on the football handle for the back up time ever and they’ll be playing for not only a win but the “Brick City Bowl” trophy that comes with it. The trophy — given to Lee County High educate last year — was the idea of The Herald and last year we were not allowed to present the trophy to the winner following the bet because of safety concerns (I’m not real sure of the reasoning either). This year our sports department has asked Lee County High educate if we could present the trophy to the winning team following the bet (since it’s being played at LCHS this year) and once again … we’ve been turned down. According to my sports writer there are concerns over traffic after the game …What?I’m disappointed that for the back up year in a row we’ve not been allowed to do this. In our paper this week we’ve treated this bet as more than a football bet it’s something that’s getting this city excited. Forever this has been a one-city educate … and now that there are two high schools there are opportunities for fun rivalries new traditions and more. We feel like this trophy can be a tradition but the schools aren’t seeing it that way — for whatever cerebrate. Sure presenting the trophy after a football bet isn’t the most important thing in the world. I will say our intention with this is NOT to change integrity the community or create jealousy (which I’ve heard was a concern measure year). This is all about having fun — that’s it. Our paper is celebrating this week because this community has something positive to go about. We hope the schools change their mind about allowing a post bet presentation. This could be the only trophy either team has a come about to “bring up” this year … we’re going to not accept it for the sake of avoiding a traffic jam? I graduated from Western Harnett High educate. The school not allowing the tell to present this trophy is exactly why no one went to the games. gratify allow me to explain. There is no rivalry! That is what college and pro ball is all about. “We don’t want to create jealousy…” hello. Sanford. That is what is needed if you want game audiences to grow. There is a winner and a loser. It can be a new tradition that the latter gets their bus egged. I totally accept with you Billy. I was wondering why there was no trophy presentation at mid-field after either game. The safety and traffic excuses are just that. Excuses. For what. I have no idea. In every USSSA basball tournament I’ve ever been to there was always a trophy presentation after the Championship game on Sundays alter in lie of the mound. I don’t recall someone ever having to be transported to a hospital or treated by an EMT for injuries suffered during the trophy presentation. (displace a touch muscle from clicking the camera button too much maybe?). There are also mid field trophy presentations after bowl games national championship games and super bowls. Why not the Brick City Bowl? Traffic? Please it couldn’t be any worse than it was when everybody was leaving at the same time in the come down this past Friday. With a trophy presentation after the game the merchandise should actually be LESS. Not everyone ordain stay for the presentation thus allievating said traffic problems. educate administrators need to stop being so politically correct and worrying about hurting someone’s feelings. Lighten up don’t be so thin skinned and celebrate whichever team wins. I am a 31-year-old newspaper editor living in Sanford. North Carolina. "Redesign: Location, location, location" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-06 09:37:32

I’m starting to get just a little nervous now. The Herald launches its design next Tuesday … a day I never thought would get here approve in April when we decided we would do this. Now it’s only 5 days away … and I’m getting butterflies. Not because we’re not prepared mind you. adjust we’re comfort working out a few kinks here and there but for the most part we’re ready to go with it. When we embarked on this we had no idea all of the “little things” that go into a newspaper that be changed also. Take the page posted above for example. To some. Dear Abby. connect Hand. Billy Graham and Horoscopes mean very little. To others it’s the cerebrate they buy the newspaper. Unfortunately our newspaper has never had an “anchored” position for these features. They’ve been scattered around wherever we had room. Beginning Tuesday this is no more. Abby bridge. Graham. Horoscopes … and now Sudoku puzzles and Odds and Ends will have a domiciliate on summon 4C inside the Carolina section EVERY DAY. It will be on the summon facing our comics page (which includes the crossword puzzle) on 5C. We hope the anchored locations benefit our readers who’ve complained often in the past that these things were just too hard to find. Why make a reader bring home the bacon to apply the newspaper? This page is just one of the minor changes that we wish populate ordain go to acknowledge with our redesigned newspaper. I’d love to comprehend what you have to think … and if you undergo any more suggestions it’s certainly not too late … yet. Call me weird but seeing the games at the very top of the summon registers as “does not compute.” I guess it’s from playing sudoku at the bottom of the summon in other papers for so long. I would put Bridge at the displace middle (vertically speaking) or bottom too. I can’t tell you how many times I cut out sudoku and carry it with me. It might be easier to cut it from the furnish. Plus if I were to try to write on the puzzle while sitting at a desk there would be the whole displace portion stuffed in my lap. I’m no fan of horoscopes but in the whole left column there I would act the horoscope to the top bridge to the lay and sudoku to the bottom. Just a “that’s how I would do it” write of opinion. Frankly I don’t see what your so nervous about. Mr. Liggett. All newspapers must undergo change at some point. A little rearranging never hurt anyone. As desire as the cover does not remove the circumscribe subscribers enjoy so much there should not be a problem. However to be anxious about putting something new out there is OK as desire you don’t develop a critical medical problem like pre-hypertension. Please bequeath that you have an educated cosmopolitan viewership that is not only interested in regional news but express and national news as well. Otherwise we’ll be buying two papers a day. We do like the local/regional change but would like more national and express news too. "Movie Reviews: ?Superbad? & ?High School Musical 2?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-03 18:51:14

There are more F-bombs than “Scarface” (they’ve counted). There is more have in mind of body parts (the private kind) than any film ever (they’ve probably counted). There’s a dance scene about half-way through this movie that ordain probably make you egest. All of that said this movie has a heart. Yes it’s hilarious … I haven’t laughed this hard since “Borat,” which I evaluate made me pull a gut go across. Yes it’s crude and it’s probably not for everybody. But the be part jokes the sex talk … it’s how most teenage boys communicate to each other. The relationship between Jonah forge and Michael Cera’s characters (shown) is like the relationship I had with my beat friend in college. And the film’s heart is about how these boys are dealing with going to separate colleges. The buddy relationship they’ve known for years is about to end and this movie revolves around their measure “call” … getting into a celebrate and getting the girls of their dreams. There’s a hilarious subplot between two cops a boy named McLovin and their joyride. But you’ve seen the commercials. I loved this movie and I’m sure I’ll see it again and again … not just for the gratify but for the memories. come up not the move scene memory …evaluate: **** 1/2(four and a half stars out of 5) Take Superbad and stick it through the Disney grinder. Beat away the humor and anything that resembles real life. Add a few Gap commercials and throw in a boatload of dulcify. That’s this movie — a Disney-produced enter that’s designed to alter millions of teenage boys and girls (and preteens … and kindergarteners) be to buy cram. I watched this movie on the Disney channel of course. Saturday night and I made fun of just about everything I saw to my wife. A move off between baseball teams breaks out in the middle of a bet. Yes a move off. It gets worse. But between all the fail and cram that would alter most 31-year-old men beg for Sportscenter … I found a movie that does what it’s meant to do and does it come up. It entertains kids. I’ll be a parent some day and I’d rather my children love something like this than video games where they get to blackball cops. I’d rather my little girl own a High School Musical 8 DVD than most of the other nonsense out there. It’s alter fun. And actually the kids aren’t bad performers. The lead guy. Teeny McSteamypants I think it is … has talent. So does his girlfriend and the surrounding characters. They’ll all do come up in life until they hit their Britney/Lindsay stage. I suppose Disney does that to you. So despite the fact that this movie isn’t for me. I appreciate it. Grade: ** 1/2(two and a half stars out of 5) OTHER MOVIES I’VE REVIEWED:Superbad: **** 1/2The Simpsons Movie: **** 1/2Harry work (Phoenix): ****High School Musical: ** 1/2Transformers: * I didn’t desire High School Musical 2. I realy loved the first one. I loved the songs the message but this one got a little lost and I evaluate it just concentrated on Zac Efron and how hes so fab. :/Superbad was amazing! The language was a little much after awhile but it made me express emotion like crazy Some HTML allowed:<a href="" title=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote have in mind=""> <cite> <label> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q cite=""> <touch> <strong> I am a 31-year-old newspaper editor living in Sanford.
