Friday night at the college the CNC mens volleyball team scored a decisive victory in its first home match this B. C. Colleges Athletic Association season. The Kodiaks overpowered the Douglas College Royals of New Westminster and were rewarded with a straight-set victory. CNC led by the arm swings of Stefan Nueesch and Ryan Sookochoff beat Douglas 25-20. 25-21. 25-22.
Nueesch finished the contest with nine kills and one block while Sookochoff -- named CNCs player of the match -- chipped in with nine kills two blocks and two aces.
Nueesch is a first-year power hitter who played professionally in his native Switzerland last year. Sookochoff also a power hitter is a local product in his second year of BCCAA volleyball.
Another standout performer for CNC in the match was rookie middle blocker Mike Dolman. He hit some stinging blackball shots and kept the Royals from being able to focus on just Nueesch and Sookochoff.
He was explosive in the middle, Laidlaw said of Dolman a Duchess Park graduate. He was hammering balls hitting better than Ive ever seen him.
I predicted over.500 (for the season) so Im still there, Laidlaw said with a laugh. Im very proud. We proved at home that we could impel some butt.
Unlike the CNC men the female version of the Kodiaks had a tough night. They lost in three sets to the Royals and saw their record displace to 0-5. Scores were 25-19. 25-20. 25-13. Douglas has also been one of the weaker teams in the BCCAA so far this season but did enough good things against CNC to improve to 3-2.
I think that we started off really good, said Kodiaks head coach Sanda Babic. The first two games were high-intensity. The third one. I guess the score showed it.
The match was filled with errors on both sides. Douglas however managed to win more points cleanly. The Kodiaks did have their moments during the contest. They got a smattering of kill shots from Natalie Hadley. Lindsay Ingram. Stevie Karran and Alison Mohammed but ultimately were undone by their serving and hitting miscues. Also defensively they were vulnerable to the tip or roll shot into the lay of the court.
Both sides were kind of like that, Babic said. I think (the Royals) played a good game. They had some good outside hitters and some good line shots.
Babic who finished her BCCAA playing career last season with the Kodiaks was an assistant coach to Janna Schmidt.
